Ekadashi / Fasting

Ekadashi / Fasting
Our digestive tract has a unique capability of secreting the exact quantity and combination of juices required for a particular mixture of food. Such a beautiful creation of God, we human being and its functioning system. Good digestion is very basis of our health. But food neurosis is a far worse problem now a days than the body deficient of nutrients. We keep thinking of food, type, time, nutrients, taste etc for our body and endup with feasting. And, we tend to forget the resting part and when to give rest for our digestive system, yes Fasting. Fasting is one of the Vedic and Yogic practice to maintain the balance in Sattwa, Rajas & Tamas Guna in our system. In other words, to purify the body and create the harmony in the hormonal system, thus able to manage and cure many diseases. Now the science of fasting has been accepted and researched with approval of its great benefits. Many research findings tend to confirm that fasting allows the autonomic systems of the body to function at a relaxed baseline level, free from the erratic and disruptive influences of the nervous system and hormones. Studies on fasting and brain waves noted a slowing and synchronization of alpha waves, the more relaxed state, together with an increased incidence of theta waves, the introspective state of awareness. But still the concept of fasting on a particular day of month or during the festival time as per the vedic system not clear to everybody. Lunar cycle of dark and bright fortnights have a powerful influence over the biological functions of the human body. Every day is not the same within these cycles. On certain days, for example, the digestive system is very active, and on others it is not. The 11th (Ekadashi), 13th (tryodashi or Pradosh) and 15th (Poornima & Amavasya) days of the dark and bright fortnights are said to have disturbing effects on the body, mind and emotions. Therefore, fasting is traditionally undertaken on these days in order to maintain balance within the whole system. Ekadashi fasting is especially important for ladies, because it has a stabilizing effect on the menstrual cycle. Most mental cases disturbances become particularly acute around the dark or full moon periods and observing fasting on these dates have great balancing effect on our mind & emotions. Series of fasting days which is observed during the rainy seasons (shravan maas) are also very popular in India and Japan, specially avoiding milk in shravan maas and offering it to Shivlingam. Navratri fasting again, to keep the mind relaxed and aware to receive the high energy of the universe during that time. Many types of fasting are suggested like water, no water (Nirjala), milk, fruit, skipping meal in the vedic system as per the climate, age and condition of the body etc. Mouna (Silence) is higher form of fasting. Not entertaining thoughts of food is also fasting 😀 So Happy Fasting. Dr Mrinalini K, 🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻 Agrim Yoga
